Tool Tip Glossary

One of the great benefits of choosing Savvy is our hundreds of different brands and types of furniture, ensuring that you will find exactly the piece you want in your home. We understand that you might not be a furniture expert, so you’ll want to see what options are available to you, and the many designs you can choose from. This glossary is designed to help you verbalize that feature that you can see in your mind, but might be stuck on the tip of your tongue.

Types

   Chair

A seat generally designed to hold one person, with various designs from small and simple, to large, and ornate.

In between a chair and a sofa, a loveseat can comfortably seat up to two people, and occupy smaller spaces than sofas.

   Ottoman

A cushioned footrest, commonly paired with sofas and chairs. May come with extra storage space.

   Sofa

The sofa, or couch, is a longer seat designed to comfortably seat two or more, and can also be used for reclining or napping.

Function

A chair or sofa that is able to recline from the typical 90 degrees, to a more horizontal angle.

   Sleeper

A sofa or chair that contains a pull-out bed.

A chair, loveseat or couch that doesn’t recline or have a pull-out bed

Design

   Modern

Post 19th century furniture design, emphasizing simplicity, cutting excess and practicality.

Classic furniture design that does not go out of style. Focuses on symmetry, order, and casual, matching colors.

A blend of Traditional and Modern design. Less ornate, but still with a classic, clean feel.

Arms

Armrests curve towards the outside, ending in a flat armrest on a diagonal plane with the ground.

Much higher armrests, sometimes up to level with the top of the back of the couch.

Furniture with short armrests which are closer to the top of the seat cushions.

Cushioned armrests on a chair or sofa, allowing for higher comfort, though less compact.

Fabric on the arms is intentionally tailored with creases or wrinkles for aesthetic appeal.

More common in traditional design, rolled arm sofas and chairs have more cylindrical arm rests.

Simple arm design of chair or sofa, eschewing ornate design for a more modern look with flat armrests, parallel to the ground.

Back

Furniture with distinct, sewn-on cushions on the back of the seat, keeping the pillows from sliding down, or disappearing.

Aka ‘HardBack’ styles, these are couches and chairs that do not have a distinct cushion on the back--common in modern furniture.

Furniture with fluffy back cushions that can be removed for cleaning or family warfare.

Cushions

Seat designed with a singular larger cushion. Known as bench seating for loveseats or sofas

Most common for loveseats, can also be used with larger cushions for sofas

Standard cushion alignment for sofas, providing an individual cushion for multiple people.

Extras

Nailed studs, typically found along the arms and edges of a furniture piece for decorative appeal

   Piping

Furniture with raised, or welted details running along the seams of a furniture piece

Extra fabric at the base of the couch, covering the gap from the couch base to the ground, common on traditional style furniture.

A style that includes buttons or folds in the seats and cushions, designed to help keep the furniture fabric taut.
